La Bella Viaggio
Troy, Ohio

Contacted by the Owner to help in site selection for her new business, Patrick Hansford Associates directed La Bella Viaggio to a vacant church. The existing assembly use group and adjacent municipal parking lots seemed to be a perfect fit for the client’s new business; a women’s fitness center and day spa. Located in downtown Troy, the historic two story masonry building was originally built as the First Baptist Church in 1855.

Patrick Hansford Associates took their design cues from the building itself and basically removed the most recent construction to open the plan as it was originally intended. Most of the design opened the interior back to the 1920’s renovation with the parsonage addition being completely modified to provide new toilet rooms and a classroom. The restored open areas on the first floor provide flexible class space.

The sanctuary, nearly twenty-one feet in height, became the Exercise Sanctuary, with cardio machines located in the former balcony. The Alter area was modified to provide a stage for aerobics instruction. The Exercise Sanctuary is naturally-lit through 18 foot tall stained glass windows. Original wood floors and interior details were restored wherever possible.
